Rocket Japanese Language Course - Why I Love It

A few years ago I decided I wanted to learn Japanese and started looking for a Japanese language course. There were so many options, and I tried quite a lot of them. Most of them didn’t work, but finally I found the solution – an interactive Japanese course that was both easy and fun.

It was Rocket Japanese!

My first attempt at learning Japanese was from books and I failed miserably. Not only was there no audio for me to learn the correct pronunciation but I got lost in learning all those characters. I focused too heavily on what sound went with which character rather than actually learning practical words and phrases. It soon got dull and I moved on to other things.

That’s the problem with books – they focus heavily on the written language and grammar. It’s hard to be inspired by boring pages covered in foreign characters and even harder to remember anything you read. The only knowledge I retained from books was how to say hello (and I’m pretty sure I knew that anyway).

I’ve also tried learning in a classroom environment. While it was better than books, it also had its problems. Classes require you to stick to a timetable. You have to show up ready to learn and a specific time each week. In the beginning, it was no okay. While I got impatient waiting for the next lesson to finally come around, I was motivated and ready to learn the minute I walked in the door.

But things happen and some days I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind to learn. I wouldn’t concentrate properly and then I’d miss things. And then of course I’d get confused because I’d missed part of the lesson. There were no pause and rewind buttons. I just had to continue. It became demoralising and a chore so I stopped.

Unfortunately, because of the formal nature of classroom teaching and the focus on grammar, once again, I hardly remembered anything of what I had learnt. So I still couldn’t hold a basic conversation in Japanese!

But most important of all – I remember what I learned! Now when I speak to someone in Japan I don’t have to just say hello and ask them to find someone who speaks English. I can actually talk to them. It’s a wonderful feeling.
